Having a newborn baby is so new to a family, having welcomed my second child recently I know only too well the feelings and newness of having a baby around. For the most part, traditionally, newborn babies will spend between three and six months in your room. This makes nighttime feeds much easier and also keeps your baby close. But there comes a time when you want to transition them from your room into their own. Where they will need to get used to a cot. It’s an emotional transition for everyone involved. While i don’t have to think about that just yet, I thought I would share with you some tips incase you are in this position right now.
Get the equipment and furniture you need
You may have already got your nursery set up and in place during your pregnancy, but if you haven't don’t panic. Just make sure you get all the essentials built and in place before you decide to do the transition. This means you can start using the cot for nap times and it becomes familiar to your baby. Essentially, you need a cot and a Cot Bed Fitted Sheet. For now at this stage, experts suggest you don’t use a pillow, and you may want to consider blankets or alternatives to keep your little on warm in the night.
Think about what comforts your baby right now
You want to make this transition as easy as possible. So look at what comforts your baby right now. Of course, it can’t be you in the bedroom with them all the time. So look at the other options. Do they use a dummy? Or do they have a particular bear or comforter? The best advice would be to make sure you keep what comforts them with them in their new room. This means that they still have something that is familiar.
Establish a new routine
You may want to try and encourage a bedtime routine that you want t stick with. So establish this early on. You may want to consider the tried and tested method of bathtime, reading a book and then bed. Or you may want to do other things that fit around your family routine. Once you establish your routine, be consistent.
Accept that the transition will take time
Some of us can be a little impatient when it comes to baby milestones. But this transition is going to be hard for you as well as your baby. So accept that the transition may take time. It might not happen on the first night. Keep to your routine and the key is to be consistent. You both will become much more comfortable with it after a few days have passed.
Figure out how you want to handle the nighttime wake ups
Finally, not all of us are blessed with babies that sleep through the night at such a young age. So there will be nighttime wake ups to consider. Of course, these might be for feeding, but how do you want to handle the ones that aren’t food related? This is where thinking about different techniques to help settle them back to sleep may be beneficial.
I hope these tips and tricks help your baby have a quick and easy transition to their new cot.
