A good night’s sleep is important for everybody. Sleep deprivation can lead to a host of adverse health effects. It can weaken your immune system, decrease mental functions, and increase the risk of various diseases. Adults should always aim to get seven to eight hours of sleep every night
But sleeping isn’t as simple as just laying down and shutting off. Many people have problems with getting to sleep each night. Parents know how difficult it can be to get a good night’s rest when you have to look after the kids! But even though parenting is important, you need to take care of yourself. There are many small adjustments you can make to get a better night’s rest. Here are some helpful tips.
Keep A Schedule
Some people don’t go to bed until they feel tired enough. If you have to wake up early for work, this can affect your sleep for the worse. You’ll be tired and groggy in the morning from not getting a full night’s rest. Many people also find that when they try to go to sleep, they can’t. Poor sleeping patterns will make you feel tired throughout the day.
To counteract this, you should try and keep a strict sleep schedule. Figure out what time you should go to bed and give yourself an hour window to wind down and relax. For example, if you put the kids to bed at nine, you might want to aim to sleep at ten. That way you can watch TV or read a book for an hour then wake up fresh at 6 AM the next day!
Sleeping at the same time every night keeps your body in a continuous cycle. It’ll make it easier to fall asleep and also easier to wake up. Make sure you put your body on a schedule that suits you.
Upgrade Your Bed
Sometimes a poor bed can stop you from getting a good night’s rest. Since your sleep is so vital to your health and wellbeing, you should make sure your bed is the best it can be.
Make sure you get an excellent mattress. You’ll want it to be firm and sturdy for back support. But ensure that it’s also comfortable to sleep on. You’ll also want some thick and comfortable pillows to keep your head comfy. Hollowfibre pillows work well for this purpose. When your pillows start to get deflated, buy new ones.
Comfy sheets are also a must. Make sure they keep you warm enough without being too hot. You should also wash your sheets and pillow covers regularly for good hygiene.
Nap Less, Exercise More
A lot of us fall into the trap of napping during the day. The problem is, it ends up in not being able to sleep come bedtime.
When you start to feel tired before it’s time to go to sleep, avoid laying down. Instead of curling up on the sofa and nodding off, get up and active.
Exercise is excellent for keeping you awake when fatigue strikes. Not only that, but it’s also shown to improve the quality of your sleep. Of course, you can also reap the benefits of weight loss and other positive health impacts! Make sure you always choose exercise over napping.
